Water Safety Saves Lives
Every year, drowning claims lives that could have been saved through proper swim education and water safety training. In King County alone, an average of 27 drowning deaths occur annually—a sobering statistic that underscores the importance of our mission.
The Learn-to-Swim Gap
The Lower Snoqualmie Valley faces a significant barrier to water safety education: access. With no public pool within 30 minutes of Duvall or Carnation, families face long drives just to enroll children in swim lessons.
The result? Over 1,000 local residents currently sit on waitlists for Learn-to-Swim programs at distant facilities.
Why Swimming Matters
Swimming is more than recreation—it’s a life skill. Research shows that formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children ages 1-4.
Beyond safety, swimming offers:
- Low-impact exercise suitable for all ages and abilities
- Therapeutic benefits for those with joint conditions or injuries
- Social connection through classes, teams, and community programs
- Lifelong fitness habits that start early
Our Commitment
A community aquatic center would provide year-round access to swim lessons, water safety courses, and lifeguard training—right here in our valley.
Until then, we encourage families to seek out swim instruction wherever possible. The CDC, Red Cross, and local YMCAs offer resources on water safety education.
Together, we can build a safer, healthier community.
